National grid collapse throws Lagos, EKEDP customers into darkness

Electricity consumers across the Eko Electricity Distribution Plc (EKEDP) network were plunged into darkness on Sunday after the distribution company announced that it lost power supply from the national grid following a transmission-level incident.

In a service interruption notice issued on Sunday, EKEDP said the outage occurred at 1:49 p.m. and had disrupted electricity supply across its entire distribution network.
“Please be informed that Eko Electricity Distribution Plc (EKEDP) lost supply from the national grid at 13:49hrs today, Sunday 28 June 2026. This is currently affecting electricity supply across our entire network,” the company said.
The Disco explained that the incident originated from the transmission system and was beyond its operational control, assuring customers that it was working with relevant authorities to ascertain the cause of the disruption and determine when supply would be restored.
“This is a transmission-level incident outside our direct control. We are actively investigating the cause and are in contact with the relevant authorities to establish the full situation and restoration timeline,” the statement added.
The development resulted in widespread outages across communities served by EKEDP, although the company did not specify the exact number of customers affected or identify the areas experiencing the blackout.
The notice also did not disclose the cause of the national grid supply loss or provide an estimated time for restoration.
While apologising to customers for the inconvenience, EKEDP assured residents and businesses that efforts were underway to restore normal electricity supply as quickly as possible.
“We sincerely regret the inconvenience this is causing and assure you that our teams are working to restore normal supply as quickly as possible,” the company stated.
The electricity distributor further promised to keep customers informed as more information becomes available.

“Further updates will be communicated as soon as confirmed information is available,” EKEDP said, while thanking customers for their patience and understanding.
The latest disruption adds to the recurring challenges facing Nigeria’s electricity sector, where transmission-related incidents and national grid disturbances continue to impact power supply to millions of consumers across the country.
