“Gowon and I will not be here when you reach 100” – Obasanjo says at Abdulsalami’s birthday celebration

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stirred light-hearted reactions after joking that he may not be alive to attend General Abdulsalami Abubakar’s 100th birthday celebration.

Obasanjo made the remark in Abuja during a ceremony at the Presidential Villa marking Abdulsalami’s 84th birthday, alongside the public presentation of three books written in his honour, including his autobiography, Call of Duty.
Speaking in a humorous tone, the former president congratulated Abdulsalami and prayed for his continued longevity, while joking about the future milestone celebrations.
He said Abdulsalami would likely live to 90 and possibly 100, but added jokingly that he and former Head of State General Yakubu Gowon might not be around by then, a comment that triggered laughter from guests at the event.
Reflection On Nigeria’s Military Past

Beyond the humour, Obasanjo used the occasion to reflect on the role of past military leaders in shaping Nigeria’s history and development.
He mentioned figures such as General Yakubu Gowon, the late General Murtala Muhammed, the late Colonel Adekunle Fajuyi, and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, noting that despite their imperfections, they contributed significantly to the country’s progress.

According to him, while none of them were without flaws, their actions helped lay foundations that continue to influence modern Nigeria.

Abdulsalami’s Role In Nigeria’s Democracy

Obasanjo also specifically highlighted Abdulsalami Abubakar’s role in Nigeria’s political transition, describing him as a key figure in restoring democratic governance after the death of General Sani Abacha in 1998.
He praised Abdulsalami’s leadership during that critical period, noting that his intervention helped stabilise the country and pave the way for civilian rule in 1999.
