It has been a common trend in Nigeria for many citizens to be singing politicians praises after getting tokens or receiving a bowl of rice, a trend commonly referred to as ‘Stomach Infrastructure or Stomach Politics’.
Stomach politics is considered detrimental to Nigeria’s development because it prioritizes immediate, temporary gratification—such as distributing food, money, or small gifts over long-term, sustainable development projects. It encourages a transactional relationship between politicians and voters, where loyalty is bought rather than earned through service or ideology.
Here is why it is considered bad in Nigeria based on the provided search results:
Undermines Long-Term Development: Instead of investing in crucial infrastructure like roads, schools, and healthcare, funds are diverted to patronage, which keeps the population in a cycle of poverty and dependence.
Promotes Corruption and Incompetence: It fosters a political culture where leaders are chosen for their ability to distribute wealth rather than their competence, vision, or accountability.

Erodes Democratic Values: It replaces ideological, issue-based politics with a system of “political prostitution” where politicians frequently switch party allegiance for personal gain, resulting in a weak, unstable political system.
Encourages Voter Exploitation: It preys on the poverty of the electorate, forcing them to sell their votes for immediate relief, which ultimately leads to poor governance and the neglect of public interests.
Normalizes Poor Governance: By settling for small, temporary handouts, citizens often lose the motivation to demand better services and accountability from their elected officials.
